International Youth Painting and Drawing Competition "Architecture of Space" (A Tribute to Kazimir Malevich)

Art Gallery Nika is holding the second international competition for young artists. The theme of the competition is "Architecture of Space." This edition is dedicated to the work of Kazimir Malevich, marking the 110th anniversary of his famous painting, "Black Square," a landmark in the evolution of visual art. Malevich became the leading proponent of the cosmic theme, a defining characteristic of the Russian Avant-garde in the early 20th century. He described his Suprematism as a "model of the cosmos."
In late 1920, Malevich declared the practical beginning of the architectural stage of Suprematism: "Having established certain plans for the Suprematist system, I entrust the further development of architectural Suprematism to young architects in a broad sense, as I see the era of a new system of architecture only in them."
As part of the "Architecture of Space" competition, we look forward to seeing how Malevich's ideas are reflected in children's artwork—where a house on another planet, a flying city, or a deep-space station can be transformed into avant-garde architectural concepts.
The main thematic approaches include the following aspects:
-
Cosmic Habitats: Projects reminiscent of Suprematist compositions—simple forms, bold lines, and the interaction of geometry with space.
-
Cities of the Future: Mega-cities on the Moon and Mars, built on the principles of abstraction, where art and architecture merge into a single whole.
-
Green Space: Biospheric spaces and ecosystems inspired by the harmony of Malevich’s geometry and his vision of environmental transformation.
-
Extraterrestrial Landscapes: Abstract forms and structures that embody the imagination of life on other worlds.
