Pilar O'Connor
Felt compositions
Her family of small business owners and the vibrant communities around her were a major influence. Her formative years—spent sewing, playing football, and skating—continue to shape her visual language, emphasizing a tactile and kinetic energy.
Pilar’s textile practice centers on felt compositions, which she hand-cuts and sews onto canvas. She first encountered this medium in 2020 while designing apparel for her brand, “Sucka Free Certified,” where she hand-cut and stitched felt typography onto sportswear. By late 2023, this technique evolved into more complex image-making, marking a transition toward narrative work through the creation of “cityscapes.”
In 2024, Pilar held her first solo exhibition at Chrystie Cafe in New York. She has also built a solid career in graphic design and art direction, holding a BFA from Boston University and a Master’s in Art Direction from Elisava.
