Description of the painting
In Wave 2, Sergey Sologub harnesses an elongated panoramic format to capture the kinetic architecture and translucent anatomy of a breaking ocean crest. Presented at eye level, the composition isolates a surging wave at the precise cresting threshold where liquid mass begins its collapse into frothing surf.
The work exemplifies Sologub’s mastery in depicting the optical properties of water. Sunlight filters directly through the thinner crest, illuminating the body of the wave in a radiant gradient of pale aquamarine, mint, and luminous seafoam green, set against the darker, shadowy depths of the undertow. Across the tumbling lip, spray and foam are articulated with tactile impasto precision, evoking both dynamic force and a suspended, sculptural stillness. Framed horizontally, Wave 2 transforms an ephemeral coastal moment into a monumental, rhythmic meditation on the power and luminosity of the open sea.
