Description of the painting
In Still Life with Onions, Sergey Sologub reimagines the classical still life through a sharply structured, geometric lens. Three golden onions and a papery scrap of peel rest inside an open cardboard box, observed from a direct top-down viewpoint that highlights the crisp orthogonal planes and the symmetry of the unfolded flaps.
The composition sets up an engaging visual tension between the manufactured, angular geometry of the corrugated box and the warm, spherical volumes of the organic produce. Sologub’s technical acuity shines in the rendering of surfaces: the brittle, translucent outer skins of the onions transition from rich coppery ambers to pale greenish hues, offset by the dry, flat buff tones of the cardboard interior. Clean cast shadows carve out volume and depth, elevating an everyday shipping container and basic pantry staples into an understated, sculptural arrangement of silence and order.
